See it, report it, stop it: Raising awareness of elder abuse

Elder abuse is any form of harm, mistreatment, or exploitation of an older person (over 60). It can manifest as physical, psychological, financial, or sexual abuse, or neglect. This can occur in various settings, including family homes or care facilities, and is a crime against vulnerable adults who may not be able to protect themselves.

How can you spot it?

  • Unexplained injuries or signs of restraint or punishment (scars, burns, bruises, etc)

  • Depression, anxiety or changes in behaviour such as becoming withdrawn

  • Preventable health problems such as bedsores or unclean living conditions

  • Leaving an older adult who needs help alone, without planning for their care

  • Changes in banking or spending patterns

Studies suggest 4% of older adults could be experiencing some sort of abuse.   Whilst this is a small number, it is the right thing to keep an eye out and report it if you suspect it might be happening.

If you spot it or have concerns you should speak to the person’s GP or social worker (if you know who this is), or local adult social services if you don’t.  Or if it is happening in a care home, speak to the manager of the care home or local adult social services.  If you suspect someone acting as an attorney under an LPA is not acting in the best interests of the person, you should speak to the DWP.
