Task Tips - Washing!
We all know we should separate whites and coloureds. But washing seems to be a lot more technical than that
these days. Here are some washing dos and don'ts we have picked up over time:
- If you have white, powder residue on your clothes,
chances are that you are actually over-filling the machine rather than adding too much detergent.
Leave space for clothes and water to move around.
- Your temperature dial can only lower the temperature of your wash,
so if you select a 'normal 40°' cycle but change the temperature to 90 degrees,
it will still wash at 40. But if you select 'cotton 90°'and keep the dial at 40,
it will wash at 40.
- Bacteria are on your dirty clothes, so it will build up in the machine.
Run a hotter than 60° wash every month with no clothes in the machine for optimum cleaning.
Use a non-coloured biological detergent.
- Don't shut the machine door between washes; it allows smells to build up.
- Open zips and catches can ruin other clothes.
Always zip up and close fastenings, and use net laundry bags where possible.
- Whilst fastening zips (see point 5) also check pockets for tissues and loose change.
- It can be time consuming, but it's always best to hand wash underwired bras.
Those wires can get caught in the machine causing all sorts of
trouble along with those tissues and loose change!
- Check your filter as often as you remember.
Not only is it good to remove the fluff, but here is where you may find some savings -
it's where your loose change goes.
- Always soak stained garments in cold water before washing.
For dark stains like wine, blackcurrant, beetroot, coffee etc,
do not wash in a coloured detergent, use a normal biological one.
-
Hang as many shirts, cardigans and t-shirts on hangers as you can when drying
as they will need less or perhaps no ironing.
